Suburb: Surry Hills Job type: Landscape design, softscaping and plant installation — rear courtyard
Surry Hills terrace courtyards present a specific design challenge that's easy to underestimate. They're typically small — often under 25m² — south or west-facing, hemmed in by neighbouring buildings, and frequently inherited in poor condition after renovation works. The soil is often a mix of compacted rubble and fill rather than anything workable.
This Surry Hills courtyard arrived in exactly that state — a catch-all for construction debris mid-way through a full home renovation. The brief was architectural and low-maintenance: a calm, considered garden that could hold its own against a freshly renovated terrace, with a zen-like focal point visible from the home office and plants that would produce warm tones complementing the terracotta feature wall.
Clearing the bed for planting revealed a concrete slab buried just below the surface — an unpleasant but not uncommon discovery in Surry Hills, where colonial-era foundations and later-period concrete work often lie hidden under decades of fill. Rather than delay the project, the slab was cut and removed on the day. The excavation also uncovered large sandstone pieces, likely remnants of an earlier foundation — these were worked into the design as feature rocks rather than disposed of.
The planting palette was chosen entirely for drought tolerance, architectural form, and warm seasonal colour: Tree Aloe (Aloidendron barberae) as the centrepiece specimen, Mexican Giant Cactus (Pachycereus pringlei) and Cowboy Cactus (Euphorbia ingens) for bold vertical form, Silver Torch Cactus (Cleistocactus strausii) for fine-textured columnar interest, Golden Barrel Cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) anchoring the ground plane, Kalanchoe Silver Spoons for silver-grey foliage and orange flowers in season, and Blue Chalk Sticks (Senecio mandraliscae) as a low spreading groundcover.
Every specimen was hand-selected at Exotic Nursery in Dural — assessed individually for size, shape, and character before going into the ground. In a courtyard this small, each plant carries significant visual weight and the selection process matters.
The finished garden is sculptural, calm, and completely at home against the renovated terrace — exactly what the brief asked for.
